Biography or Historical NoteThe Department was founded in 1917 during World War I and was first known as the Michigan Troopers Permanent Force. In 1919, Public Act 26 established the MSP as a permanent department. The MSP currently has around 3,000 members who serve citizens over the entire state and other local police departments. The MSP is headed by a Director, who is elected by the Governor. The Director also serves as the Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director for the state.
