Biography or Historical NoteThe Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is charged with maintaining natural and cultural resources. The DNR was created in 1965 by the Executive Reorganization Act of 1965. In 2009, the DNR was combined with the Department of Environmental Quality and became the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE). In 2011, Governor Rick Snyder eliminated DNRE and created two separate agencies--the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environmental Quality. Prior to 1965, the agency was called the Michigan Department of Conservation.
