Biography or Historical NoteThe Michigan State Highway Department was authorized in 1903 by Public Act 203 and officially established in 1905 by Public Act 146. The Department’s responsibilities included all of Michigan's highway systems (Michigan State Trunkline Highway System) and other forms of transportation, including airports, shipping, and railroads. The Executive Reorganization Act of 1965 changed the name to the Department of State Highways and established it as a principal department of the executive branch. The name changed to the Department of Transportation in 1978. Today, MDOT is headed by a Director that is appointed by the Governor.
