Biography or Historical NoteThe Michigan Military Establishment originated with a territorial act in August of 1805, which provided for a territorial militia. Numerous public acts dealt with the organization of a state militia between 1838 and 1909. The Military Establishment was run by an adjutant general, who was appointed by the governor. The Military Establishment's duties included protecting the United States on a federal level and preserving the property and public safety of Michigan’s citizens in times of natural disasters and civil unrest. The Executive Organization Act of 1965 transferred the powers and responsibilities of the Military Establishment to the Department of Military Affairs.
