Biography or Historical NoteMichigan's Department of Education (MDE) was first formed by the Constitution of 1850. The Department is headed by the Superintendent of Public Instruction, who is chosen by the State Board of Education. This Board is composed of eight members who are elected for eight-year terms with two seats up for reelection every even-numbered year. The Department of Education's duties include training and certifying educators, K-12 education, special education, grants, health and food programs, statewide student assessments, school accountability, and handling state and federal school aid and other funding.
