Biography or Historical NoteThe Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) was created in 2013 by Executive Order 1, which moved the Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation (OFIR), an office under Licensing and Regulatory Affairs’ (LARA), into becoming its own Department. Including OFIR, DIFS also combined duties of the Insurance Bureau, Financial Institutions Bureau, and securities functions of the Corporations, Securities, and Commercial Licensing Bureau (CSCLB). DIFS is responsible for overseeing Michigan’s banks, insurance, and other financial industries. Additionally, DIFS administers the Autism Coverage Reimbursement Program. The Department is headed by a Director that is appointed by the Governor for a 4-year term.
