Biography or Historical NoteThe office of the Secretary of State was established in the 1835 Michigan Constitution. It called for the Secretary of State to be appointed by the governor to two-year terms. The Constitution of 1850 changed the Secretary of State from an appointed office to an elected office. The 1963 Michigan Constitution changed the term for Secretary of State from two to four years and established the Department of State as a major executive department.
