Biography or Historical NoteThe Department of Treasury was first formed in 1805 by Territorial Act XXII and was named the office of the Territorial Treasurer. All of Michigan's constitutions have provided for a state treasurer. The Department of the Treasury was established with the Executive Reorganization Act of 1965 and is headed by the State Treasurer who is appointed by the Governor. The Department’s duties include collecting, investing, and disbursing state money and administering state tax laws. The Department also handles the state’s credit and disburses funds to local government units.
