Biography or Historical NoteDepartment of Health (MDH) was first established by Public Act 81 of 1873 as the State Board of Health until 1919 when the board dissolved. The board’s responsibilities and power went to the State Commissioner of Health until 1965, when the Department of Health was created by Public Act 380. The DOH was headed by a director and 8-member advisory council, all of who were elected by the Governor. The department's duties included the protection of public health and for investigation disease sources, approving organizational health plans and minimum performance standards, administering state subsidies to local health units, and distribution of federal funds for the construction of medical facilities. In 2015, the Department of Community Health and the Department of Human Services merged to form the Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
